"A sparkling debut" — Historical Fiction Society Indie Reviews

A woman striving for justice

Fianna Cameron has devoted her life to avenging the death of her father, hanged as a traitor during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Now, on the eve of her thirtieth birthday, only one last miscreant remains Major Christopher Pennington, the English army officer who not only oversaw her father’s execution, but falsely maligned his honor. Fianna risks everything to travel to London and confront the man who has haunted her every nightmare. Only after her pistol misfires does she realize her sickening mistake the Pennington she wounded is far too young to be the man who killed her father.

A man who will protect his family at all costs

Rumors of being shot by a spurned mistress might burnish the reputation of a rake, but for Kit Pennington, determined to add to his family’s honor by winning a seat in Parliament, such sala-cious gossip is nothing but a nightmare. To regain his good name, Kit will have to track down his mysterious attacker and force her to reveal the true motivation behind her unprovoked assault. Accepting the mistress of an acquaintance as an ally in his search is risky enough, but when Kit begins to develop feelings for the icy, ethereal Miss Cameron, more than his political career is in danger. For Kit is beginning to suspect that Fianna Cameron knows far more about the shooting—and the reasons behind it—than she’s willing to reveal.

As their search begins to unearth long-held secrets, Kit and Fianna find themselves caught be-tween duty to family and their beliefs in what’s right. How can you balance the competing de-mands of loyalty and justice—especially when you add love to the mix?

While I enjoyed this book and found the characters complex and fascinating, the political struggles take up an inordinate amount of the story and bog it down a bit. I don't mind historical details if they are balanced with romance and humor to lighten up the intrigue. I also like to see different sides to the characters, not just their intensity in dire situations and where their loyalties lie. I thought this plot could have used some lighter moments to it's benefit. The novel was well written and I assume, well researched, since I don't know much about this time period and it's events.

This book depicts the difficult times during the Irish and English conflicts that were more unbelievable than this story could ever tell. However, Bliss Bennett has taken a far different view and made a very interesting story.
The love story of Kit and Fianna is an example of love overcoming all kinds of obstacles. Blind loyalty is not a trait to be admired. There’s a detailed portion allotted on Irish/English politics that I speed-read through.
Really enjoyed this story. It was exciting, caring romantic ,and showed how a womancould get way she wanted it she played it cool. Fianna got what we wanted in the end. She was a powerful wins in her own rights. Kit fell in love with re person who could make him a better person. Good book. Thanks. Diane
I respect all the research and work the author and her editors put into this book, and I learned a few new words. However, to me, there seemed to be rough or awkward spots in the writing--places where emotions should have been explored but the story or dialogue moves on instead. There is sex and the two main characters end up together, but this is not a romance novel (nor is it sold as one).
I really enjoyed this book. I got so caught up in the love story... When, if ever, were they going to be honest with each other???? I thought all of the conflicting feelings in the heroine was intricate, well written and delicious.

A Rebel without a Rogue gave me what I think all good historical fiction should give... a yearning in me to learn more about the historical events that the book is based on. Thank you Bliss Bennet!
I don't care for most so-called historical romances as most of have no more historical value than the fashions of the period. And the romance? Lots of "irresistible" debutantes charming their way into marriage with a likewise "irresistible" rich, handsome peer. There's also the naive girl whois seduced into "romance" by the alleged redeemed rake. The intrigue is either about stubborn misunderstandings (since the parties don't seem to be allowed to have actual conversations) or about some dastardly villain trying to make off with the debutante for her dowry. No thank you.

This book is light years away from that drivel and appears well edited. We have intelligent (yes, imagine that!) characters dealing with real life political issues in Regency England and Ireland. The relationship between the lead characters is definitely not easy, as it begins with deceit and hidden agendas. Family loyalties are also at cross purposes with their relationship, but eventually, trust is established and the characters have honest conversations.
I almost never rate anything modern a full 5 stars, but Bliss Bennet's first foray into Regency romance is nothing short of enthralling. What colorful characters she creates, and all of them believable, none of them trite. Wonderful, suspenseful plotting, and dialogue that sounds true to the period without being stilted. I honestly cannot think of one thing I disliked about this book. Bennet raises the bar for Regency romance. I didn't find any typos or misspellings or grammatical errors, and even learned some new words. What a joy to be drawn into the world she has created in this novel! The Irish historical theme particularly captured my attention, as I have strong Irish and Scots-Irish ancestry. I intend to read the rest of the Pennington series; although the homosexual theme of the next novel is not my cup of tea, I trust Ms Bennet to handle it well. Thank you, Bliss Bennet, for such an excellent book!

Disclaimer I got this book through one of the free ebook websites. I do not know the author except from reading this book (but I wish I did).
